Valve considered making a new VR game for the Steam Frame, before tackling the "ludicrous" task of getting Half-Life: Alyx running standalone

15 September 2026 at 12:29

Valve have sometimes – if perhaps not often enough to call it a grand old tradition – massaged interest in their hardware by pairing the kit with a new game. For the Steam Deck it was Aperture Desk Job, and for 2019’s jammy sod of a VR headset, the Valve Index, it was Half-Life: Alyx, a full-length City 17 adventure that reviewer Graham (RPS in peace) called β€œa masterclass of first-person shooter design.”

Still, people rarely want to take the same class twice, hence why padding-compacted eyebrows have been raised by Alyx again being a tentpole of the new Steam Frame headset – this time, to showcase the game running in PC-less, standalone VR. Why not make something new, even a smaller tech demo like ADJ or the Index’s own The Lab collection of Portal-themed minigames?

According to Valve staff, several of whom I spoke to prior to the Frame’s Monday night launch, there were several reasons why a return to Alyx was considered more valuable – even though a brand new VR game was, at least briefly, on the table.

Roblox plan to grow their absurd gaming empire even further by letting devs release games as "standalone apps", potentially via Steam, Epic, and GOG

14 September 2026 at 11:36

Not content with pulling in daily active user counts roughly equivalent to the population of Japan, game creation platform Roblox are planning to let developers release their games "as standalone apps across mobile, PC, and consoles, with Roblox powering the technology and services underneath." The news comes via this year's Roblox Developers Conference. They are calling the new initiative "Roblox Everywhere", two words that can surely only ever be uttered in the form of a Machiavellian giggle or a scream of purest terror.

GNOG and Goodbye Volcano High dev KO_OP share that they are laying off staff in the only, remotely good statement I've seen in a while

10 September 2026 at 18:59

Today marks yet another day in reporting on layoffs that have occurred in the games industry over the past several years, with this occasion unfortunately being GNOG and Goodbye Volcano High developer KO_OP. The studio shared word that 13 staffers were being laid off less than two weeks after the launch of the studio's latest game, Young Suns, explaining the process by which this took place in a statement that provides an example of what should really be just the bare minimum in these situations.

No Man's Sky's 10th anniversary update will let you rule space stations, built floating orbital bases and go on holiday to the sun

9 September 2026 at 16:30

No Man's Sky is a decade old. Let that sink in. No, seriously, you'll need plenty of water to survive the trips that the massive space game's 10th anniversary update allows you to embark on. It's now possible to get up close and personal with the stars that serve as suns in each system. Or, if the risk of fiery death's not your cup of tea, you can establish a new home by taking over as director of a space station or building an orbital base that floats among the stars.

Star Citizen spinoff Squadron 42 has been delayed yet again, citing everyone going gaga for GTA 6, even if it isn't coming to PC yet

29 August 2026 at 17:31

There is a big part of me that doesn't really believe any aspect of Star Citizen is real. It's never really a game I've given all that much of my attention to, the thing gives off pyramid scheme energy in a way I can't quite explain. Probably something to do with the numerous promises developer Cloud Imperium Games have made over the years that haven't always come to fruition in the way they said, or when they said, they would. And here's yet another example of that: Squadron 42, the story-based single-player spinoff of Star Citizen, has been delayed in 2027, all because of a pesky game called GTA 6.

Roblox put a stop to games that include rewards for endless, TikTok-style scrolling, if you're under the age of 16 anyway

25 August 2026 at 16:15

It continues to both amaze and concern me that a whole other internet ecosystem appears to exist within the realm of Roblox. Recently, a game by the name of Steal an Egg has blown up on the UGC platform, which is more or less what it says on the tin: you need to steal an egg. This is Roblox we're talking about, however, so Steal an Egg comes with a big ole asterisk that comes in the form of a treadmill you can train on whereby you can doomscroll through TikTok videos.

New bootloader lets you take the "Meta" out of the original Meta Quest

25 August 2026 at 16:04

Remember the original Quest headset that Meta (then Oculus) trumpeted back in 2019? Meta seems to hope you don't, since the company officially stopped supporting the wireless VR headset in 2023 to focus on the more popular Quests 2 and 3. However, tinkerers haven't abandoned the hardware and recently released a new root-access exploit and bootloader that gives "developers and enthusiasts full control over Quest 1 hardware."

The QuestStack project integrates previously known vulnerabilities in the Quest's Android fastboot process into a privilege escalation chain that leads easily to full root access on the device. The bootloading process is now streamlined enough that it can be completed without any downloads through a web interface after connecting the headset to a PC.

With this exploit, the original Quest hardware can now be officially divorced from any reliance on Meta's servers or services to be useful. That means enterprising Quest owners should be able to sideload apps without needing to register for a Meta Developer account and activating Developer Mode through Meta's mobile app. It also means users should be able to go through the initial setup and login steps for a fresh Quest headset even if and when Meta decides to shut down the servers that currently support this process.

The US Senate are investigating Roblox for prioritising "revenue and engagement metrics over the safety and well-being of our children"

17 August 2026 at 16:30

US senators have launched an investigation of game creation platform Roblox on a broad charge of putting money before child safety. They accuse Roblox of being a venue for "sexually explicit (and often violent) virtual 'experiences' with children", and have requested a range of documents and records, including details of the company's collaborations with Sesame Street, the NFL and FIFA.

Even 10 years on, Sean Murray feels like he could work on No Man's Sky "forever," even if he knows "there probably is some end date" for it

11 August 2026 at 16:28

What's that? It's been 10 years since No Man's Sky launched? Oh! That's gone by a bit too quick! In that time the planet hopping survival game has changed drastically, starting life frequently derided for missing promised features, slowly morphing into what it is now. The game now has a massive mish mash of features that have kept people coming back year after year, and according to Hello Games co-founder Sean Murray, he could keep going as long as they do.

Roblox causes Wall Street value estimators to cry themselves a $9 billion puddle, as a result of pushing less kids towards aggressively monetised viral games

6 August 2026 at 12:08

Wall Street moneyfolk are not having a good time. They're openly weeping into their expensive suit sleeves and not even a thousand pictures of lines going up can reassure them. They're sad about Roblox. The everythingverse of user-made games generally aimed at kids has let them down by changing its algorithm to push less kids towards "games that emphasise short-term monetisation". Cue $9 billion being lopped off Roblox Corp's market cap valuation, because how could the game's makers allow such a travesty to happen?

30 July 2026 at 09:41

BeamNG.drive's long been one of the easiest games to reccomend to a car lover cruising the streets of Steam. As Graham wrote in 2017, it's a moddable sandbox dedicated to vehicular destruction physics, in which every bump, crumple, and slam results in a glorious bending of metal and smashing of glass. BeamNG's been growing via updates for ages, and its devs say the latest is the biggest yet.
