"A dried husk of a product": former Doom producer berates Microsoft for making Halo a "mid-tier" game and mourns the "financialisation" of AAA

16 September 2026 at 13:30

Former Doom: The Dark Ages producer Andrew Willis has shared tuppence on the state of the blockbuster videogame trade, arguing that the biggest companies and most popular series are going through a familiar "cycle" whereby the moneyfolk finally displace the creatives, and start messing games up in the name of short-term returns. He reckons that the likes of Halo are well on their way to becoming "a dried husk of a product that everyone just now associates with like, slop".

Troubled Witcher multiplayer spinoff Project Sirius struck with new round of layoffs

13 August 2026 at 14:32

Project Sirius, CD Projekt Red’s unsettled attempt at a multiplayer Witcher spinoff, is facing further difficulties. Following a Kotaku report, the Polish dev-publishers confirmed to IGN that they were cutting 18 staff members from the project – believed to be around a quarter of the game’s overall team size, which was already dwarfed by the CDPR crew assigned to mainline singleplayer sequel The Witcher 4.

Of the affected developers, half have been made redundant, while half "have been invited to internal recruitment processes for potential roles on other CD Projekt Red projects." This is also the second time the company have slashed Project Sirius staff, with layoffs following an effective reboot in 2023.

Supermassive Games are the latest studio to announce layoff plans, with 75 jobs at risk just three months after Directive 8020 launch

11 August 2026 at 15:30

Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology devs Supermassive Games have announced the beginning of redundancy consultations for up to 75 of its staff, a process that will almost certainly add to the thousands of layoffs endured by the games industry over the past few years.

Posted on Not Twitter earlier today, the announcement of these imminient cuts comes just three months after Supermassive’s most recent horror adventure, Directive 8020, and contains wording that’s uncomfortably reminiscent of the studio’s last round of mass redundancies in July last year. That, too, followed a previous round in early 2024, in which an estimated 90 workers at the UK-based studio lost their jobs.

Hundreds rally at Bethesda HQ to protest Xbox layoffs, and Ars was there

15 July 2026 at 22:36

ROCKVILLE, Marylandβ€”Hundreds of Bethesda Game Studios and Zenimax Online Studios employees and their supporters braved nearly 100Β° F temperatures to protest sweeping layoffs across Xbox during a lunchtime rally in front of parent company Zenimax's headquarters today. The rally was one of fiveΒ today organized by Zenimax Workers United and its parent union, the Communication Workers of America, at offices across Texas, California, and Montreal.

Attendees held up signs with messages like "Layoffs... layoffs never change" and "Our players deserve better" as union organizers and employees rallied the crowd with speeches and songs. The overwhelming message was one of solidarity and a willingness to push back against job cuts they say have decimated their development and quality assurance teams.

"It's about us building our movement and making sure that we get seen and we're visible," Bethesda technical producer and union volunteer organizer Nathan Hahn told Ars. "Because we want to make sure that we're not okay with these layoffs and that Xbox knows."

Bethesda, id Software reportedly hit hard by Microsoft layoffs

7 July 2026 at 19:52

In announcing plans for 3,200 layoffs across the Xbox division yesterday, CEO Asha Sharma focused on discussing cuts to the Xbox platform team and redundant layers of middle management. Now, though, word is filtering out about significant staffing cuts at remaining Microsoft-owned game developers including id Software and Bethesda.

Apogee and 3D Realms founder Scott Millerβ€”who helped publish some of id's earliest gamesβ€”wrote on social media yesterday of "insider reports" that a majority of id had been laid off, "including most (if not all) coders." And last night, veteran programmer Michael Maynardβ€”whose credits at id Software date back to 2011's Rageβ€”wrote on LinkedIn that he was among the "roughly 50%" of the id team that was let go Monday.

Game Developer cites "multiple anonymous sources" in confirming those reports, saying the redundancies amount to about 90 employees at the Doom studio. The first DLC pack for last year's Doom: The Dark Ages launched earlier today.

The incredible shrinking Xbox: Five studios, 3,200 employees let go

6 July 2026 at 16:01

Last month, Xbox executives laid out some "hard truths" about Microsoft's struggling gaming division that they said would require a difficult "Xbox reset." This morning, Microsoft revealed the brutal shape of that "reset," announcing plans for 3,200 layoffs and the divestment of five smaller studios that the company has spent years acquiring and shepherding.

Half of those 3,200 layoffs are effective today, new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma wrote, while the other half will come by the end of Microsoft's 2027 fiscal year (which runs through June 30, 2027). CNBC cites "a person familiar with the matter" in reporting that these cuts amount to roughly 20 percent of the Xbox division.

When combined with 1,600 newly announced layoffs across the rest of Microsoft, the company as a whole is letting go of just over 2 percent of its workforce. But The Seattle Times reports that Microsoft's total headcount has remained relatively stable thanks to other hiring.
