The result would be an ubermegacorp to serve as a vehicle for all of the Saudi wealth fund's future video game-related biz.

Bit of an anticlimax, really. After months of (justified) revulsion and anti-anticipation over Nvidia DLSS 5’s AI rendering, it’s now available in a live game - license laden b-baller NBA 2K27 - and it looks... maybe not that bad?

This not-that-badness does come at an enormous cost to performance, and I’m still sceptical of how DLSS 5 will handle something more stylised than 2K27’s devotedly realistic depictions of varnished court floors and face-scanned athletes. But given how artistically botching and/or ridden with rendering errors the earlier previews have been, this specific implementation, in this specific game, is at least inoffensive in the looks department.

The warlord Michael of Jordan united the people of Chicago under the crest of the bull, then with his general Scottie of Pippen and the triangular religion of bishop Phil of Jackson, conquered the whole realm. Alas, those feeble heirs who inherited Michael's fiefdom upon his passing into retirement failed to retain all he'd won, and soon kings named Kobe of Bryant and LeBron of James vied for supremacy. This, I assume, is how a playthrough of NBA 2K27's new MyNBA Legacy mode might go, given it seems to have taken cues from Crusader Kings 3's multi-generation dynasty-crafting.

Now the ink's starting to dry on the Saudi Arabian government and Jared Kushner-backed takeover of EA, which has seen the company go private, staff are getting to grips with what the ownership change might mean for them going forwards. Fears of layoffs and teams or game series being sold off following the leveraged buyout hang in the air alongside unease about the effect the Saudi state's values might have on what gets the green light in future, with staff suggesting EA haven't done a very good job of alleviating such concerns.

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, equity firm Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner's Affinity partners have completed their $55 billion acquisition of EA Sports FC, Battlefield, The Sims, Mass Effect and Dragon Age publisher EA. This comes following a filing from EA to the US Securities and Exchange Commission last week, and confirmation that the European Commission had no intention to stop the deal.

Released in early access in 2016, Blacklight Interactive’s devilishly competitive crazy golf sim ended up joining Among Us as a Covid lockdown darling, allowing those of us bored with pretending not to betray and victimise our oldest chums on spaceships to do so openly, on cartoon golfing greens. Now Golf With Your Friends 2 is in the works, at Golf 1’s DLC developers Radical Forge, and it sounds like it wants to ensnare you and your mates in a series of club-and-ball arguments for eternity.
