how to get bigger results by doing less

how to get bigger results by doing less
Most businesses overcomplicate marketing. Here’s how to simplify and scale.

Hey,

Most businesses think real growth comes from doing more.

More tactics, more channels, more complexity.

Nope.

The real secret to scaling isn’t about piling on—it’s about stripping away the unnecessary and doubling down on what actually works.

That’s the foundation of Lean Marketing.

It’s how we’ve built and scaled our business, and it’s how we help our clients cut through the noise, create a true growth engine, and get bigger results by doing less.

And if you’re ready to do the same, check out this episode of The Lean Marketing podcast.

In this solo episode (just 13 minutes), I break down the 9 principles of Lean Marketing and how they help businesses grow—without unnecessary complexity.

Here’s a taste of what Lean Marketing looks like in action:

Content as a Pulling Force – Your content should do more than just “engage” people. It should attract and convert the right audience into paying customers. Forget vanity metrics—focus on content that moves people closer to buying.

Assets Over Campaigns – Stop relying on one-off promotions that disappear when the budget runs out. Instead, build marketing assets (like evergreen funnels, referral systems, and authority content) that keep working for you long after they’re created.

Marketing as a Process, Not an Event – Big brands aren’t built on random launches and rebrands. They’re built on consistent, repeatable marketing processes. The best marketers aren’t just creative—they’re process-driven, treating marketing like a system rather than a series of disconnected events.

If your marketing feels overwhelming, scattered, or ineffective, this episode will help you cut through the clutter and build a system that works with you—not against you.

Give it 13 minutes, I promise it’s worth it.

[Watch the episode here]

And if you’re serious about applying these principles to your business, let’s talk. Details below.

how I turned big events into real connections

how I turned big events into real connections
The biggest mistake people make at events? They don’t have a game plan. Here’s how to fix that.

Hey,

I recently attended a major conference—huge names, tons of insights, and some incredible connections.

But the real magic? It happened outside the conference rooms.

Years ago, I dreaded networking at events like this. I’m an introvert, and making small talk with strangers never came naturally.

Now, some of my best partnerships, podcast guests, and business relationships—people like Pat Flynn, Mike Michalowicz, and Ayman Al-Abdullah—have come from these events.

And it wasn’t luck. It was strategy.

The problem most people have is they go into these events with the wrong strategy (or no strategy at all):

  • Trying to “sell” too soon without building real relationships
  • Sticking to surface-level chats that go nowhere
  • Failing to follow up and losing all momentum

So, what actually works?

Focus on value first – Instead of asking, What can I get?, flip it to How can I help? The best relationships start with giving.

Have a clear, compelling intro – People remember specifics. Instead of I’m in marketing, try I help businesses diagnose the gaps in their strategy so they can scale faster.

Be memorable – One of my favorite tactics? Ask for a unique follow-up. Instead of “Let’s connect on LinkedIn,” say, Send me that book recommendation you mentioned—I’d love to read it.

Follow the 48-hour rule – Send a follow-up within 48 hours, referencing your chat and sharing something valuable.

One more pro tip: use the event roster to your advantage.

Most big conferences provide an attendee list, speaker lineup, or app where you can see who’s coming. This is an underrated tool that most people ignore.

Instead of walking in blind, use it to pre-identify the most valuable connections.

  1. Find Common Ground – Look for attendees in your industry or those with overlapping interests.
  2. Make a Shortlist – You can’t meet everyone, so identify 5–10 key people to connect with.
  3. Engage Before the Event –  A short DM or email like “Hey [Name], I saw you’ll be at [Event]! Would love to connect and hear about your work in [industry]. Will you be at [specific session]?” makes the first in-person conversation easy.

Instead of scrambling to meet people, you’ll have a clear plan—making networking feel natural and productive.

At the end of the day, networking isn’t about collecting business cards. It’s about building real relationships.

Got an event coming up? Try this and let me know how it works for you.

the boring marketing habit (that made me rich)

the boring marketing habit (that made me rich)

Hey,

I have a (slightly embarrassing) confession:

I'm a sucker for makeover shows.

They're an entrepreneur's cat nip...especially for someone who helps businesses scale for a living.

We start by meeting someone in crisis—burnt out, overwhelmed, on the brink. Maybe it's a failing restaurant, a chaotic home, or someone who hasn't seen the inside of a gym since 2004.

Then, an hour later, we get to the big transformation:

The Michelin-star-level menu.

The meticulously organized closet.

The six-pack in all its glory.

Most people tune in for those before & after moments—when all that hard work and sacrifice pay off in one triumphant reveal.

Me? I love everything in between.

That messy middle when things aren't so picturesque, but our leader powers through to the finish line.

But in business, that “in-between” can last years.

And no celebrity chef's showing up to fix your business with a camera crew and some profanity-laced tirades.

In marketing, there's no magic makeover.

But there is one way to rig the game in your favor:

Building marketing systems.

That's how you create consistent, repeatable wins...the kind that lead to those makeovers worthy of a streaming service.

If you're doing marketing in fits and starts—launching random campaigns, copying competitors, guessing what works—you're not alone. But you're also not building anything that lasts.

Here’s one thing you can do today to start building a system:
Commit to a single repeatable marketing activity—then systemize it.
That could be:

  • Sending one value-packed email every Thursday

  • Publishing one lead-generating blog post each month

  • Running the same evergreen ad campaign—with smarter tweaks every quarter

It doesn’t have to be flashy. It has to be consistent.

Because in marketing, momentum beats brilliance.

Start small. Start boring. Start today.

That’s how you win over and over again.

Curious—what’s the one marketing activity you’ve done consistently that’s actually moved the needle?

Hit reply and let me know. I read every one.

My business was winning. I wasn’t.

My business was winning. I wasn’t.

Hey,

When my business first hit 7 figures, I felt like I’d finally made it.

Revenue was pouring in. Clients were happy. The team was growing.

But behind the scenes?

I was barely scraping by.

Bank balance: near zero.

Stress level: through the roof.

I was running a rich business. But I felt like a poor man.

Most founders I meet are killing it on paper—but still can’t seem to pay themselves properly, let alone build wealth.

So I’m teaming up with Mike Michalowicz—yes, the Profit First guy—for a live session to help you fix that.

It’s called From Leads to Legacy: How to Grow a Business That Builds Personal Wealth. We’re going live Wednesday, July 9 at 6 p.m. EDT / 3 p.m. PDT / 8 a.m. AEST (July 10).

[Click here to save your seat]

Here’s what we’ll break down:

  • The #1 reason founders stay broke—even with solid revenue
  • The 6-account system Mike uses to create lasting wealth
  • How to build a business that funds your life—not just your payroll

This is about turning income into a system that funds your life...not just your business.

If you’ve ever felt like “I should be further ahead by now,” this session is for you.

marketing’s changed (but not how you think)

marketing’s changed (but not how you think)

Hey,

Nine years ago, I hit publish on a book I wrote from my kitchen table.

That’s when everything changed...

I had no list. No big-name blurbs. No publisher backing me.

Just a smaller house, slightly more belly, and a strong opinion about how small business owners were being taught marketing completely backwards.

That book? The 1-Page Marketing Plan.

Fast forward about a decade and the book’s helped over 1 million entrepreneurs build smarter marketing systems and scale without chaos.

My life has changed quite a bit since then...but the world of marketing?

That’s barely recognizable.

  • In 2016, TikTok didn’t exist. Now it’s teaching 22-year-olds how to outmarket the pros.

  • AI was something startups pitched—now it’s pitching you ideas (like the concept for this email.)

  • YouTube was for cat videos. Now it’s a lead gen machine.

  • The hottest trend was ‘growth hacks.’ Now it’s brand, trust, and staying power.

  • “Online business” sounded shady. Now your Uber driver runs three.

  • You couldn’t run ads with “free” in the copy. (Okay fine… that one hasn’t changed.)

Long story short:

The world’s evolved fast.
But marketing fundamentals haven’t.

If your message isn’t clear, your leads won’t convert.

If your offer’s weak, your funnel won’t fix it.

If you’re the system, you can’t scale.

The ones who win in 2025?

They’re doing the same things I wrote about back in 2016.

They have a real strategy—built around clear positioning, the right audience, and systems that convert cold traffic into raving fans.

So if you're still scratching your head trying to figure out where your marketing went wrong...start with the fundamentals.

If you’ve been trying to piece this together yourself—or you're not sure where things are breaking down—this is the next step.

[Book a Free Lean Marketing Audit]

We’ll look at where you’re stuck, what’s working (and what’s not), and point you toward the right tools, tactics, or systems for your situation.

Here’s what the right strategy has helped founders like you do recently:

— Anthony tripled his email list in a year—and doubled revenue from a single campaign
— Kerry added $45K in revenue with one targeted reactivation email to past customers
— Drew overhauled his customer journey and saw an 800% ROI on Google Ads

They didn’t guess. They didn’t patch it together.

They implemented a real system—and let it scale with them.

Ready to do the same?

[Book Your Audit Here]

Tools change. Algorithms shift. Platforms come and go.

But strategy? That's what lasts.

the customer’s always right? wrong.

the customer’s always right? wrong.
Learning is great, but success isn’t about consuming more information—it’s about taking action.

Hey,

You’ve heard the phrase a million times:

The customer is always right.

It’s a nice idea. But it’s also completely wrong.

Think of any company that provides a service. If customers always knew what was best for them, they wouldn’t need help.

Plumbing problem? You’re not getting under the house with a wrench and a YouTube tutorial. You call a plumber because they know exactly how to fix the issue.

Health issue? You’re not self-diagnosing based on a Google search (or at least, you shouldn’t be). You go to a doctor because they can separate real symptoms from you definitely have that rare tropical disease you read about online.

Bad haircut? You’re not grabbing kitchen scissors and hoping for the best…unless you want a horrible mistake and photos that live for eternity.

As the saying goes, you don’t know what you don’t know.

In marketing, most businesses have no idea how to create a strategy that supports their vision and helps them scale.

That’s why, as much as we love our clients, we don’t always give them what they ask for. We give them what they need to succeed.

Which brings me to something we hear often:

We run 13 live marketing clinics every single week in our Accelerator program—13 opportunities to get feedback, work through roadblocks, and implement strategies in real time. Yet, some people ask for recordings instead of showing up.

"Can I get a recording of the clinic?"

No. And here’s why:

Knowing without doing = zero progress.

If you can’t make time for one live clinic, what makes you think you’ll find time to watch a recording?

Even if you do watch it, what’s actually going to change?

Watching is passive. Doing is what moves the needle.

Success loves speed. The fastest-growing businesses don’t gather more information—they take action and adjust as they go.

That’s why we run live clinics: to help you tackle problems today, not when you get around to watching a replay.

Because success doesn’t come from knowing. It comes from doing.

But what if I just want to learn?

Learning is important. But there’s a key difference between learning and overconsumption.

You don’t succeed by being stuck in perpetual learning mode. Knowledge is only valuable when it’s put into action.

Too many people get caught up in watching videos, reading books, and taking courses, thinking they need more information before they can act. But information without action is just clutter.

If you’re stuck in analysis paralysis, here’s your next step:

  1. Pick one thing you’ve learned and implement it today.
  2. Test your assumptions and see what works.
  3. Adjust as you go, based on results.

If you’re ready to stop consuming and start implementing, we offer a free marketing audit to help you create a clear path forward and accelerate your growth. You'll leave with clear, actionable strategies to implement and move your business forward.

Click here to schedule your free audit

Because doing is what actually drives results.

So here’s the real question:

Are you going to keep watching from the sidelines, or are you going to get in the game?

the weakest strong man at the circus

the weakest strong man at the circus
Stop putting out fires. Discover the system that builds momentum to 8 figures.

Hey,

I still remember the first time I entered the 7-figure club.

Reaching one million in revenue was a huge milestone for my business.

I thought I would feel a sense of accomplishment, like I had crossed some imaginary threshold to legitimacy. Instead, I felt…empty.

There was no celebratory champagne or self-congratulatory pats on the back—just a looming sense of burnout and pondering to myself “what’s next?”

There’s a scene from Succession that’s stuck with me.

Cousin Greg —awkward, earnest, slightly confused as always—is talking about the $5 million inheritance he’s expecting.

He’s excited. Thinks he’s golden.

Connor and Tom look at him like he just said he found a nickel on the sidewalk.

Connor:
You can't do anything with five, Greg. Five's a nightmare.

Greg: Is it?

Connor: Oh, yeah. Can't retire. Not worth it to work. Oh, yes, five will drive you un poco loco, my fine feathered friend.

Tom: The poorest rich person in America. The world's tallest dwarf.

Connor: The weakest strong man at the circus.

Funny. Brutal. And painfully accurate—especially if you’ve ever run a 7-figure business.

Because while only about 9 percent of businesses ever join that exclusive club…

Running a million dollar business doesn’t always feel like success.

You’re still putting out fires, patching broken systems, and too deep in the day-to-day to think—let alone scale.

In fact, less than 1% of businesses ever make that leap to 8 figures.

Like Cousin Greg, they’re stuck in that dead zone:

  • Too successful to walk away.
  • Too stuck to scale.
  • Just “successful enough” to drive you un poco loco.

The reason why 99% of businesses never reach the next level?

8-figure businesses don't run on sheer willpower.

If you want to scale without burning out, you need a real SYSTEM—a predictable, repeatable marketing machine that builds momentum without you carrying it on your back.

A system that…

  • Keeps leads flowing even when you're offline.
  • Sells consistently without you in the room.
  • Gives you crystal-clear clarity on what's working—and what to do to hit that next level.

This is the exact framework we help founders implement inside The Lean Marketing Accelerator.

I've lived this journey myself, scaling from zero after years of costly mistakes and relentless learning. And I've guided thousands of ambitious business owners to get unstuck and finally achieve true, sustainable growth.

Now it’s your turn.

Ready to start building a business that works for you?

[Schedule Your Strategic Accelerator Session Now]

We'll dive into your business, pinpoint your current challenges and goals, and determine whether The Accelerator is the right program to help you take the leap.

You'll leave with a clearer understanding of your path forward, and how our program can support it.

Because you didn't come this far to stay stuck. You came to dominate.

are you surrounded by cheerleaders or champions?

are you surrounded by cheerleaders or champions?
If you really want to level up, you need people who challenge you. That’s the difference between the people who stay stuck and the people who build something truly great.

Hey,

Ever watch rugby? I love it.

The build-up before a big match. The intensity on the field. The sheer physicality of the game.

But this week, as I sat down to watch my favorite team play, I realized something…beyond the tackles and the strategy, there’s a lesson in every game.

You’ve got cheerleaders and champions.

One stands on the sidelines, waving pom-poms, shouting encouragement, and telling everyone they’re doing great—whether they are or not.

The other? They’re in the trenches. Pushing their team to greatness. Holding them accountable. Demanding more, even when it’s uncomfortable.

And in business, the difference between the two is everything.

Early in my career, I had plenty of cheerleaders. Friends, family, even colleagues who told me I was doing great—whether or not I actually was. It felt good, sure. But it wasn’t helping me get where I wanted to go.

The real turning point? Surrounding myself with champions.

People who challenged my thinking, called me out on my excuses, and refused to let me settle.

That shift led me to my greatest achievements, building and scaling multi-seven-figure businesses and writing two international bestsellers.

None of that happened because someone stood on the sidelines telling me I was doing great.

That’s why we don’t just hand our clients a strategy and wish them luck, cheering them on from the sidelines. We act as your champions.

  • Challenging you when you’re playing small
  • Holding you accountable to the goals you set
  • Asking the hard questions when something isn’t working

Our Client Success Manager, Sarah, is relentless in keeping clients on track. Our team of advisors and experts work alongside you, not just to teach, but to make sure you execute.

Because the truth is, everyone says they want success—until they realize what it actually takes.

You have to be willing to be challenged.  You have to be willing to hear when you’re wrong.  You have to be willing to push beyond where you’d normally stop.

That’s the difference between the people who stay stuck and the people who build something truly great.

So, here’s your challenge:

1. Audit your circle. Who’s pushing you? Who’s just clapping from the sidelines?

2. Expand your network. Surround yourself with people who demand your best.

the truth about remote work (and why most get it wrong)

the truth about remote work (and why most get it wrong)
One of the best decisions I ever made was building a remote team. No pointless meetings. No micromanagement. No wasted hours commuting just to sit in a cubicle.

Hey,

One of the best decisions I ever made was building a remote team.

No pointless meetings. No micromanagement. No wasted hours commuting just to sit in a cubicle.

The corporate world is obsessed with butts in seats, and the headlines are full of big companies dragging employees back to the office.

Remote work is painted as a lazy-free-for-all—workers lounging in pajamas, binge-watching Netflix, and “working” between naps. That’s nonsense.

Good employees don’t need a babysitter. In fact, the best ones thrive with freedom.

A big part of my success has been hiring the best talent—not just the closest talent.

When you hire remotely, you’re not limited to whoever happens to live within a 30-minute drive. You get access to the best people, period.

And the best people? They want to work for companies that trust them to deliver results—not ones that measure productivity by hours in a chair.

So, despite what big corporations want you to believe, the strongest teams aren’t caged. They’re free-range.

But here’s the questions I hear most:

How do you trust remote employees? How do you monitor them? And how do you make sure they’re actually working?

Here’s the short answer: You don’t “manage” remote workers. You hire A-players and track what actually matters.

A-players don’t need constant oversight. They’re self-motivated, driven by results, and excel when given the freedom to own their work.

When you have the right people in place, your job shifts from managing them to creating the conditions that allow them to thrive.

So, if you want to build a high-performing remote team, here are the key steps to take:

  1. Hire for attitude, not just skills.
Technical skills can be taught, but a proactive, hungry attitude can’t. A-players don’t need micromanagement—they own their work.
  2. Focus on one mission-critical priority.
Give your team multiple priorities, and they’ll focus on the easiest one. Instead, give them one standout goal that, if hit, makes everything else fall into place.
  3. Measure the right things.
Bad metrics lead to bad results. Track what’s easy to measure, hard to game, and tied directly to business impact.

most leads suck—here's how to fix that

most leads suck—here's how to fix that

If you’ve read The One Page Marketing Plan, you already know:

Most businesses don't have a lead problem.

They have a qualified lead problem.

It's easy to get people to download a checklist or watch a video.

It's much harder to attract buyers—the kind of leads who are qualified, motivated, and ready to buy.

That’s exactly what scorecard marketing expert Daniel Priestley and I will be covering in our upcoming webinar:

Get Better Leads. Get Better Clients.

Date: June 11th, 2025
Time:  1 PM PDT  / 4 PM EDT / 9 PM BST (UK)

[Reserve Your Spot]

Daniel’s someone I’ve admired for years. He’s the founder of Dent Global and ScoreApp—used by over 5,000 businesses worldwide to generate and qualify leads. He’s also the author of six business books, including Key Person of Influence.

Together, Daniel and I have helped thousands of business owners scale using simple tools and systems that automatically attract and qualify top-tier clients.

On the session, we'll show you how to:

  • Create a lead magnet that attracts action-takers, not freebie hunters
  • Qualify leads before they hit your calendar
  • Turn cold traffic into conversations and sales with one powerful tool

If you’re tired of chasing leads that don’t go anywhere, I think you’ll find this really useful.

the #1 job of every business owner…and most screw it up

the #1 job of every business owner…and most screw it up

    Hey,

What’s the number one challenge in this business right now that—if solved—would make the biggest difference?

That’s the question Jack Delosa asks himself daily.

And it's one every founder should steal.

Jack’s built one of Australia’s largest business growth agencies. His clients have generated over $6B in revenue—and he’s been named one of Australia’s richest young entrepreneurs five times by the AFR.

As he puts it: “If I had to summarize a CEO’s job in one word, it’s prioritization.”

We sat down on The Lean Marketing Podcast to unpack how real growth happens—and why most founders are focused on the wrong things.

Here are three takeaways from our conversation:

    1. Constraint-to-Constraint Growth
Business growth is about resolving one bottleneck at a time—whether that’s people, delivery, cash flow, or systems. Focus fully until it's fixed, then tackle the next.
    2. You Don’t Need to Be a Guru to Build a Personal Brand
You just need to be you. People connect more with authenticity than polish or posturing.
    3. Simple Systems Scale Better
Growth isn’t about layering on complexity. It’s about installing simple, repeatable systems that free you up and let your team deliver results without you.

If you’re feeling stuck, stretched, or unclear about where to focus next—don’t miss this one.

    Watch the episode now.

    New episodes every Wednesday.

    Regrets, I’ve had a few…

    Regrets, I’ve had a few…
I rarely talk or think about regrets. But today, I’m going to share one with you…in the hope that you don’t make the same boneheaded mistake I did.

I rarely talk or think about regrets, if at all. But today, I’m going to share one with you…in the hope that you don’t make the same boneheaded mistake I did.

It was the early 2000s, and I was the founder of a tech startup. Broadband Internet was getting rolled out, and I knew the Internet was going to be huge.

My gut was telling me to move my tech startup to Silicon Valley. There, I’d have better access to capital, the right talent, and, most importantly, an environment where everyone was on the same path. As they say, proximity is power.

I ummed and erred about the decision. There were many reasons not to relocate - I’d be far away from family, tech stocks were severely down, and there were costs I hadn’t planned on. I stayed put.

I justified it to myself in a million different ways, but the truth was I let fear, inertia, and being “sensible” make the decision for me.

And while you can never know how things would have turned out, I strongly suspect that not listening to my gut in this instance cost me hundreds of millions of dollars. I watched startup after startup with almost identical products as mine IPO or exit for billions.

Look, don’t cry for me. I’ve done OK. I still exited that business for more money than I’d ever seen in my life and made investments that have created generational wealth.

Fast forward to today. The same way I knew in the early 2000s that the Internet would be huge is exactly how I feel right now about AI.

    Can you feel it?

This time, I’m not making the same mistake. I’m going all in.

While I’m no longer in tech, my team and I have created a plan to TRIPLE our revenue this year without adding any new staff — by leveraging AI. We’re putting a huge amount of time, money, and personnel into AI-enabling our whole business.

The tools and processes we’re implementing are absolutely mind-blowing. This rabbit hole goes deep. Far deeper than just ChatGPT and how to use prompts. It touches every process in your business.

As I said in my book Lean Marketing, “AI won’t take your job or disrupt your business, but someone using AI will.”

AI is making marketing and business faster, easier, and cheaper. If you don’t leverage it, your competitors will. That’s not a scenario you want to find yourself in.

That’s exactly why I hosted a deep-dive webinar on AI & Marketing: What You Need to Know for 2025 (And Beyond).

    In it, I cover:

How AI is driving business efficiency, innovation, and growth
The two mindset shifts you need to maximize AI’s impact
The exact AI tools we’re using to streamline marketing, content creation, and decision-making
How to prompt AI for better, more precise outputs (so you don’t waste time on garbage results)
Real-world use cases and strategies you can implement right now

If you missed it, the good news is you can still watch the full recording.

    [Watch the AI Webinar Now]

The opportunity with AI is massive—but only if you take action.

In the early 2000s, I had a window of opportunity and snoozed on it. The only question is, will you?
